15 Great Off-Page SEO Techniques

Share

There are many people who are just starting to blog and many more that have run their own site for a while, that don’t know what SEO is and how to implement it!

SEO simply stands for Search Engine Optimisation. This is where you construct your web pages and implement certain techniques to help you rank as high as possible on search engine result pages (SERPs). The higher your pages can rank on Google/Bing/Yahoo/etc. results pages, the more traffic your site is likely to get.

Now, SEO can be split up into two separate categories; On-Page SEO & Off-Page SEO.

On-Page SEO refers to all the things that you can do ON your website to help you rank higher, such as page titles, internal linking, meta tags & descriptions, etc.

Off-Page SEO refers to all the things that you can do directly OFF your website to help you rank higher, such as social networking, article submission, forum & blog marketing, etc.

In today’s post we will be looking specifically at Off-Page SEO and some of the most effective ways to increase your page rankings on search engines.

Search Engine Optimisation

Off-Page Search Engine Optimisation

1. Social Networking Sites

Social Networking is bigger than ever these days! Sometimes known as “Online Reputation Management”, getting involved with social media sites is the fundamental step with which you begin to advertise, market and build your online reputation within your niche.

You need to sign up to the most popular social networking sites, such as; Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+, etc., and create yourself a profile of your own. This allows you to extend your online network of contacts, to connect and interact with your friends, to share things with each other, and most importantly promote your website/blog and help build your online reputation.

2. Blogging

Blogging is one of the best ways to promote your website online! By writing a blog for your website, you give a reason for visitors to keep returning to your site and keep up to date with your latest posts. It also helps search engines to crawl your site more frequently, as they have to update your latest blog post entries, which ultimately helps you rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).

You need to produce and include lots of unique content for your blog, such as; Infographics, Top Lists, How To…Tutorials, Viral Videos, etc. Try to remember to be clear and concise in what you are trying to convey to your readers within your blog posts, don’t waffle.

To help you promote your blog, submit it to niche blog directories and blog search engines. (See below)

If you’re not very good at writing content for your blog, then you could always hire a guest blogger for your blog and ask him/her to write precise and unique content so that your blog can gain more credit from a search engine point of view.

3. Blog Marketing

Post comments on other blogs within the same niche as yours, which allow you to add a link in the comments section. These links can then be crawled by search engines, helping to point them towards your site.  These blogs are commonly referred to as “Do-Follow” Blogs (Just like ours, where you can comment below!).

4. Forum Marketing

Find forums online that are related to your sites niche and get involved within that community. Reply to threads, answer peoples questions, offer advice, etc. This all helps to build up your reputation as someone who is an expert within that niche. Try to use “Do-Follow” Forums so that you can include a link to your site within your signature, which helps search engines crawl your site.

5. Search Engine Submission

Search engines will eventually find your site online, but that can take a while. To speed everything up, you should submit your website to the most popular search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

6. Directory Submission

Many people may say that directory submission is dead! I believe that it isn’t as you are increasing the likely hood of people seeing your website. It is purely based on how effectively we are selecting those directories and how efficiently we are choosing the category for submission. You could submit to general directories, but for maximum effect, you are better off submitting to niche directories. Of course, I agree that it gives quite delayed results, but it is worth doing it.

7. Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking is another great way of promoting your website. Submit your latest blog posts and pages to the most popular bookmarking sites, like StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious, Reddit, etc. Search engines really like these types of sites because the content on these sites is updated very frequently.

You should be very careful while doing this and you must properly handle the tags which are very essential to broadcast your news on a wide area network. This may increase your website traffic based on how effectively you have participated.

8. Link Baiting

Link baiting is another popular way of promoting your site. If you produce a really popular unique post for your site, then other people may want to link to it. Perhaps you have copied/published another website’s content on your site, don’t forget to place their website link as a reference. Do it for others and, if your content is trustworthy, let others do it for you. This is another way to increase your link popularity.

9. Photo Sharing

If you have used any of your own photos or images on your site, then you can share then on many of the major photo sharing websites like Flickr, Picasa, Photo Bucket, etc. Other people will be able to see them and comment on them, hopefully following a link to your site.

10. Video Marketing

Just like photo sharing, if you have any videos that you have used on your site, then you can submit them to sites like; YouTube, Vimeo, etc. allowing people to find your content in other ways.

11. Business Reviews

Write reviews about others businesses or ask your friends/clients to write a review of your business in major business review sites like RateitAll, Shvoong, Kaboodle, Stylefeeder, etc.

12. Local Listings

Depending on your site’s niche, you might find that listing in local directories may be useful. You may have a website promoting your local business, therefore instead of going global and facing huge competition, listing your website locally, so that search engines can easily view your website and fetch the content, will be much better. This will help you to reach a targeted audience. Submit your website to sites like; Google Local, Maps, Yahoo Local, Yellow Pages, etc.

13. Article Submission

If you write your articles yourself, then you can submit them to popular article directory sites like; Ezine, Go Articles, Now Public, etc. This can help drive traffic to your site, whilst you can also gain some links to your site from other people (though it’s usually a slower process).

14. Social Shopping Network

If you run an e-commerce website, then a good strategy for advertising and branding your products for free is to submit then to online shopping networks. By submitting your products to sites like; Google Product Search, Yahoo Online Shopping, MSN Online Shopping, and other major social shopping network sites like Kaboodle, Style Feeder, etc. then you increase the likelihood of people finding the products that you are selling.

15. Answer Questions

You can actively participate in answering questions on sites like Yahoo Answers. By answering and asking relevant questions on your site niche, you help to build up your reputation as someone that is an expert in your chosen field. You can place a link to your website in the source section if necessary so that people can easily find your site. If you don’t spam, this is another great way to increase your link popularity.

Hey Matt ……. Great to see your blog ….. Me currently started my career in SEO field……… will you tell me exact scope of SEO….. and can i see my future growth in this field… Leaving on page and off page …….. what other techniques should i need to learn like PPC, Ad-sense, Affiliate Marketing etc.. any website where i can learn all these techniques…. plz must reply

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

      Hi Sourb,

Well SEO is a vital subject to learn about if you run your own website. Both On-Page & Off-Page SEO techniques are vital for attracting traffic to your website/blog. I believe that more emphasis will be put on SEO as search engines look to supply the best content for people.

As for other techniques to learn about, it depends on your own site. PPC, Ad-Sense, Affiliate marketing, etc. are great things to learn about if you are intending to make money with your website (See http://onlineincometeacher.com/money/30-ways-your-website-can-earn-you-money/)

Just remember to take one step at a time! Don’t try to learn everything in one go before you start a website, launch your website and then implement things as you go along.

Thanks Sanjay! Yes, since the Panda update, On-Page SEO has become much more important. I’d say that it is THE best way to get yourself ranking highly in search engine results pages (SERPs) and ultimately drive more traffic to your website.

      Hi Rohan, thanks for commenting!

Photo sharing isn’t the best or most effective method of getting people to your website, but non the less, it can work. I certainly wouldn’t spend too much time concentrating on this method as the others on this list are much better, but it’s really quick to upload your pics to Flickr that it can’t hurt!

  • http://www.avigma.com/ Avigma

Off Page Search Engine Optimization has been become probably the most important factor in how your site ranks. The internet and world wide web continues to grow and grow at an enourmous rate. Pages of similar topic obviously arise. There might be 100 million web pages on the topic of baseball or 100 million web sites on the topic of web site design and search engine programming. Because of this enormously large database of similar content, search engines began focusing on off page factors in determining relavancy of search results.

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Off-Page SEO is a very big factor that helps to identify relevant information from all the millions of generic websites. It is a vital way to drive traffic to your website and spread the word about your website.

  • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

I’d have to say that I think both On-Page & Off-Page SEO techniques are equally important as one another. After all, you need to use both to truly see the benefits.

  • http://www.webdesignbizz.com/ Template Design

  • http://www.simplybest10.com/ AjayKumar

All of the tips are just awesome and it will help a lot. But i did not understand what is link baiting…..?

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Ajay! Well link baiting is a way of attracting other people to link to your site. You do this by producing something of value on your site that other people want to share. Infographics are a good example of this!

Say you produced an infographic about social media on your own site. Other blogs may want to link to it in their own posts, or even publish it directly on their blog. Either way, you get a link to your website! The more links you have, the better your SEO will be.

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Link Baiting can be a great way of getting links to your site. The key is to produce and link to quality content that will benefit your readers.

  • Stacey@HappyBudgetGirl

Excellent (& very thorough article, Matt.) Just wondering…which offline SEO techniques do you mostly use and how much time out of your week do you dedicate to it?

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Stacey! Well I’d say that I use a combination of many of these, but primarily I use social media. Social media is a great way to promote your site and increase brand awareness. Site’s like Twitter enable you to interact with your readers directly and answer their questions.

I’m not sure exactly how much time in my week I dedicate to Off-Page SEO. If I had to guess, maybe 50%! If I’m not writing posts/working on my site, then I’m usually promoting my site.

      Thanks for commenting Stacey!

    Hi Thanks for nice tips.

But how much time be taken by Search engine to real action and start showing our site on first page after following all steps.

    Thanks

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

That’s a difficult question to answer. It all depends on the individual site and niche, as well as the keywords/keyphrases that you are ranking with. I’ve had some of my posts get on the first page of Google within a few hours of publishing them, yet some posts never get that high.

Either way, these methods are important to getting visitors to your site!

Hi matt smith. I am an SEOer Person and doing seo previous four years. My question about all of seo topics you mentioned in your post. How many article and Press release submit in one day with i Content ( 400- 500 words ), For one keyword how many we can submit social bookmarks in one day ( 1 URL ) .

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Chandan! I’ve never used iContact before, but as it’s a CMS, it shouldn’t be any different to WordPress.

You can submit as many articles & press releases in a day as you want. Some bloggers post 1 a day, whereas some post 1 a week. It all depends on you and how you work. I myself post 3 a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) as this fits in with my schedule.

The same can be said for social bookmarks. You can submit as many as you want to them.

      • http://www.facebook.com/juni.bahuguna.1 Bhoopendra Gupta

Ok I agreed to you but I read somewhere that if we did so much submissions in a day ad on other day then very less. so the website google tracks then, and cosider it as a spam.
Me, not professional but just think that if we use same quantity dailt then we can attain good rankings.
        Pls reply me.

        • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

The key to getting a good search engine ranking is to produce “quality” content “consistently”. That’s why I always say to new bloggers start out slow, say 1 post a week, but keep doing that every week.

If you are consistently producing and publishing content, then Google will notice you. If on the other hand you publish every day for a month and then nothing for the next two months, search engines will think that your site is no longer active. In this case they won’t send you any traffic, as they only want to send traffic to active sites.

So however often you choose to publish content on your blog, make sure you do it consistently.

Hope that helps answer your question Bhoopendra :)

Are these techniques are still effective after penguin update?

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Sandy! Yeah, these methods are still effective. Try focusing on Guest posting, blog commenting and social media. They are probably the best methods to use.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ronie-Walter/100003831463758 Ronie Walter

    I agree of this article.
Off Page SEO, on the other hand, deals with the use of different techniques which aim to improve a website’s relevance and authority in a specific search query. This part of the campaign is also where the bulk of the whole SEO campaign is found.

According to many SEO experts, one method used in off-page SEO is link building, which is still considered as the most effective method used in SEO. It involves using the actual researched keywords as links from other websites.

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Ronie! Link building is definitely the best Off-Page SEO method. Guest posting can be a good way to do this, although it is equally good for building connections with other bloggers.

  • http://twitter.com/sarojnayak_twit Saroj Nayak

    Hi Matt,
I have a question. After Google penguin update what should be the off page work strategy for 1 keywords having 3 articles(400-500 words) i.e. 1 for article submission, 1 for press release submission and another 1 for blog creation? I want to know the exact no. of submissions per day.

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Saroj! I wouldn’t say that is an exact science to this. I can’t give you an ‘exact’ number because a lot depends on what keyword/keyphrase you’re using and what niche you are aiming for. Even then, there is the quality of your articles to consider, web design, etc.

      • http://twitter.com/sarojnayak_twit Saroj Nayak

Thanks for reply, i am giving you a hint. If the keyword having 3000 global search and 2500 local search and the competition is medium. Then what should be my off page strategy to get ranked that keyword on Google 1st page?

        • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Saroj! Like I say, it’s hard to say without knowing the keyword/niche. As the competition is ‘medium’, then it’s going to be a lot tougher than a ‘low’ keyword/keyphrase.

Sometimes it can depend on how much traffic you can drive to that page. I’ve ranked highly on SERPs for ‘high’ competitive keywords, yet I’ve also ranked low for ‘low’ competitive keywords and vica versa.

There is no exact science, but it’s good that you are doing your research.

          • http://www.facebook.com/Saroj.Ku.Nayak Saroj Nayak

Ok, According to you on what strategy you had ranked the High Keywords and also for the low keyword on SERPs?

          • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

I use the same strategy for all my posts, whether they are low, medium or high. I make use of social media & social bookmarking sites to spread the word about each post when published.

I try to comment on blogs frequently and leave helpful comments.

I try to write so many guest posts every month for other sites. By doing this, I can link back to my site and some of my relevant posts that I have written.

But the best strategy that I have is that I publish regularly on my site. By doing this, people continue to keep coming back to my site because they know that there will be new content every week on a regular basis..

          • http://www.facebook.com/Saroj.Ku.Nayak Saroj Nayak

Thanks for sharing me your information….Except these, Will press release, Blog Creation, forum posting and Directory submission help me to get ranked??

Yes, they can still be used to help you to get ranked. I think the best advice that I can give is to do a little of everything, rather than a lot of one or two. Don’t rely on a couple of techniques to rank highly, use as many different ones that you can. That way, should Google make any changes that effect one method, you will still have all the other methods to keep you ranking highly.

  • Ramakrishna

    Hi Matt Smith
    can you please tell us

How many submissions (sbm, ds, article submissions, blog comments, forum postings, classified ads, press release submissions, video submissions and all other tactics!! ) we can submit maximum in one Day and per week? Please dont say it depends on the site traffic..just tell me the maximum no. of submissions per a week.
    Thank You

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Ramakrishna! You can submit as many as you want, there is no maximum/minimum number to aim for. The only thing I’d say is “be careful”. If you start with one or two submissions per day and then suddenly have hundreds, then search engines will get the impression that you are either buying links or spamming them.

If anything, stop thinking about the “number” of links and start thinking about the “quality” of links that you are getting. Making a handful of high quality comments on good sites is SO much better than making hundreds of poor comments on rubbish sites. Submitting one great quality guest post is SO much better than submitting lots of poor quality ones.

This is the mind set that you need to get into – quality not quantity!!!

      • http://www.facebook.com/juni.bahuguna.1 Bhoopendra Gupta

        yeah matt!

This is absolutely true and we have to believe seriously in submitting quality links after the strict updations of panda and penguin. But Dear Matt I just want to know that is forum signatures still effective in promoting the website.. actually i have read somehwhere that they count as a spammy link by google.

One more question. :- i am not getting good amount of organic visitors on my website so please help in regarding to improve those numbers .

        • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

I think forum signatures depend on what link you’re using and (more importantly) what forum you are on. Certain forums are seen as spammy as they attract people for the wrong reasons, or have lots of dodgy links.

I don’t tend to comment on too many forums myself, but the ones that I do, I make sure that the site isn’t blacklisted by search engines.

As for getting more organic traffic, I’d suggest you read up about ‘On-Page SEO’ [http://onlineincometeacher.com/traffic/on-page-seo-techniques/]

These are what helps you to appear in the search engines more effectively. Also, once you have learnt about this, it will help you think of better targeted content to write about.

  • Vikas

Hi Can you tell me how many articles should i submit in one one month Now i am doing 4 articles in one month 15-20 articles sites…

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Vikas! Well, there is no magic number that you “should” aim for. I’ve seen sites become successful posting 1 a week, and some multiple times a day. It all depends on you.

Arguably more importantly is to be consistent. If you choose to publish (for example) 3 times a week, make sure you publish 3 times a week, every week! Too often I have seen sites start off well, only to slowly fade out as they stop posting regularly. That’s one of the reasons I always recommend starting small and building yourself up. Start posting a couple of times a week, then increase it if you think that you can publish consistently.

But no, there is no magic number of posts that you should be publishing every week/month.

Hope that helped answer your question Vikas.

  • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Are you talking about sending multiple submissions to directory sites? If that’s the case, then it can be seen as spam.

If you are talking about publishing multiple posts on your own site, then it depends on the quality of those posts. 25-40 submissions a day sounds like an awful lot!

You’d be much better off publishing 1 high quality post per day, that is of genuine value to your readers. Use keywords in your post, but don’t over use them. This is the best way of building up your traffic.

Hey matt.. nice post really helpful for all…
    I have 1 qus?

    Photo Sharing,
Business Reviews necessary in Off page seo?

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Darshak, glad you liked the post!

Yes, both photo sharing and business reviews are great Off-Page SEO techniques that you can use.

Sites like Pinterest & Flickr are great places to share the photos that you use on your site. Place a link back to the post where you used them and they can help drive traffic.

Business reviews can also work. Ask or encourage people to write reviews of your site/business on reputable sites and people will see them. It’s important that these reviews are genuine though, don’t go writing them yourself!

Thanks for sharing some of the best ways to get site excel on search engine by white hat ways after the updates of google panda and penguin techniques done by white hat ways are got only praised

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

      Hi Jean,

White hat SEO is the only method that people should be using to rank well long term. Black hat SEO is pretty risky and won’t work long term, in fact it could end up back firing and harming your site.

      • http://www.swiftprintuk.com/ jean

agreed matt as matt cutts says this year will be the year of google algorithms so its best to be far from black hat

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

      Hi Sunny,

We all have to start somewhere, so I’m glad the post helped.

  • Bhupender

Yes all these activities are good to get backlink and to rank in search engines. But the thing we should take care is that we should create links in well manner rather than creating in bulk and irrelevant links

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

I totally agree Bhupender! Links are good only when they are of a high quality and relevant. Anything else could actually harm a site if not careful. Much more care needs to be taken not that Google has released Penguin 2.0. Think many sites are having to go back and reassess their link structure now.

    hello matt
Excellent article! There are so many good points here that I’ve bookmarked it and will study it carefully over the coming days.actually i want to know that is forum posting also an important task in off page?

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

      Hi Jay,

Forum posting CAN be a good way to build links, though obviously you need to do it in the right way. Posting just for the sake of it to get a link just looks spammy, so it’s always advised to post something of quality that adds to the discussion in some way.

You also have to remember that many forums prevent people from leaving links (at least initially) to help stop spam. You may need to become an active member before you can leave your link.

Great Article. At present, White-Hat SEO technique has become more expensive, as all the good PR directory submission, local listings and social bookmarking sites have now become paid, in order to reduce spam.

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

I wouldn’t call them “expensive” at all. Like you say, all they are doing is trying to reduce the number of spam links and dodgy sites from advertising on them.

There are plenty of free white hat SEO techniques that you can still use. Just don’t bother with any black hat techniques, as it will have major negative consequences in the long-term.

Smith you are saying Directory submission is not dead, right? But i did not get a single backlink by submitting directory, they all have mentioned there long approval time(in free listing) but how long? I think directory submission is just wasting of time.

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

      Hi Mukesh,

Yes, I’d probably have to agree with you there. Directory submissions are generally a waste of time for what you get out of them. Saying that, however, I would still stick with my statement that “…directory submissions are not dead” because, if you can find the right site, they can still provide a benefit. Of course finding that site is becoming much harder.
