Driving Traffic

Having a well designed website is not enough to ensure you attract visitors regularly. Web traffic generation is the next step you should take seriously. This is a vital step that you must work on to build a successful websites.

Traffic can be driven from many different sources, such as; backlinks, guest posts, recommendations, email marketing, social media, etc. Diversifying your approach to driving traffic is the best way to improve your SEO. A good way to start is by tracking all site visits via Google Analytics. This is the only way to identify where the majority of your visitors are coming from and where they are navigating to after landing onto your site. The following five web traffic generation tips are ways to help you generate more site traffic!

Web Traffic Generation Tips

Blogging

Blogging is one of the most effective web traffic generation tools available to website owners. This may sound obvious if you run a blog, but blogging also benefits other types of sites, such as eCommerce or small independent business sites.

The dynamic nature of a blog gives you the ability to publish and update posts quickly. Features for pinging blog directories make it easy to appear on search engine indexes within a very short time.

Starting your own blog is quite easy to do and you do not need any programming or specialized skills to get started. There are two major blogging platforms that you can use: WordPress and Blogger. WordPress is considered the more professional platform to use, whereas Blogger is more suited to personal blogs.

You can choose to run a free-hosted or a self-hosted blog. The difference is between the two is that the features accessible are different and allows you more control over what you place on your site. Check out our ‘Should I Start A Free Hosted Blog Or A Self Hosted Blog?‘ post for more information.

Make use of the video tutorials offered to ensure you optimize the blog elements properly. Remember to use keywords in your regular blog posts. Your posts should be well written and focused on a certain service or product niche. If you consistently post new blog posts, visitors will flood in every day.

Social Media

A study carried out by eMarketer shows that 63.7 percent of people in the United States use social networking sites. This is a whopping 147 million users that you are potentially missing by ignoring social media. It pays to consider the different demographic groups found on these sites. According to the eMarketer study, 18-24 year old form the most active age group. Over 90 percent of internet users in this age group will take time and visit social networking sites. This does not mean that the older generation has shunned social media interactions. The study found that 31 percent of internet users over the age of 65 use social networking sites.

Create a conversation about your brand and your services on these sites. It is wise to use analytical tools to find out how effective your branding efforts have been. The good news is that most of these sites have favorable search engine rankings. You can generate massive traffic flows to your site all without spending a single dime.

Forum Marketing

Many people seek product and service opinions from other users on forum platforms. Try to find popular and widely read forums within your niche as your starting point. The best way to generate traffic from forums is by participating in conversations and being helpful by answering peoples questions. You can add a link via your forum signature space back to your site, which will appear on all comments that you post. This way forum readers will be able to visit your site easily.

Your site will also receive a traffic boost from search engine spiders indexing the forum posts. The signature will act as a backlink that visitors can click onto and head to your site. Do not engage in spam-like activities or else forum moderators will hand you a swift ban.

Article Marketing

This is an informative way of reaching a wider online audience. Article directories consist of huge amounts of articles targeted at different product and service categories. Most of the articles are written in an effort to provide free information to other web users. The articles can be published elsewhere so long as the author biography is not tampered with. Use the resource box to add a link to your site as well as author information. Focus on widely used directories to reap maximum benefit. Start by submitting a few articles every month. If the response is positive, increase the number of articles submitted accordingly.

Email Marketing

Building your own mailing lists will give you the opportunity to target existing customers and acquire new visitors on the cheap. Create your own newsletter and inform people on your mailing list about your new product or service offerings. Make sure you analyze responses from interested clients. You can easily generate considerable sales leads using a mailing list. Avoid sending mail to people who have never opted in. it is advisable to have an opt-in form on your site where interested visitors can sign up. Leveraging these strategies properly will result in a significant number of visitors headed your way.

Nice post! Social Media and Email Marketing though are good sources of traffic – but typically only for established bloggers. New bloggers won’t have any traction on these mediums but they should work on building them up for later.

Also, SEO should definitely be #6. While don’t don’t want to RELY on SEO, it should definitely be a PART of your plan!

Yeah, SEO is definitely an important part of driving traffic. I was tempted to add this myself to the guest post, but I didn’t want to add my own #6. Ryza did mention the benefits of SEO though.

      Thanks for the comment Thomas!

I agree with you. SEO should be included here since organic traffic accounts for more than 50% of many websites

Hi Ryza, great points. But “be everywhere” means:
    1) you should work 24 hours a day :)
    or
    2) outsource some of these activities

      Hi Chris.

I think Ryza meant – be in as many places as you can be. So the more places that you can promote your site and get your content seen, the better.

Outsourcing some of your work is a good idea though. As you say, you can’t work 24 hours a day, so this is a good way to get your work done.

      Thanks for the comment Chris!

        Hi Matt,
outsourcing is the best idea in online business – you can outsource almost everything. Only on the beginning, yoou should spend some time and money for starting it. I don’t know, if you remember, but I wrote in one of my post, what online passive income means to me: Possibility of delegating tasks :)
        BR, Chris

Now that you mention it, I think I do remember reading that on one of your posts. Good piece of advice!

Hi guys, great post Ryza, my only concern is with Google’s duplicate content, is article marketing still a worthwhile practice? I for one thing article marketing should be forgotten in favour for guest postings, do more of them instead of putting articles in directories.

Chris, if you can afford to outsource some of your work and find a quality person then yes, if not at the beginning it might mean working long hours until you can outsource. Sometimes it is worth taking a step back and seeing if doing something yourself costs you more in time and money in the long run than paying someone to do it for you.

As an example, you write a great post but decide you want to have it turned into a video by copying and pasting it to slides then recording the slides in Camtasia to make the video for YouTube also the slides can be uploaded to SlideShare .net as another traffic generating method. You can do it all yourself, but it could take a good chunk of time away from your usual daily activities.

You could find someone on one of the cheaper job sites like fiverr. com who might do it for you for a few dollars and leave you to carry on doing the writing of posts and guest posts, the commenting on blogs and the social media which will bring in traffic to your site which in the long run should be worth more than the dollars spent on having the slides and video made. Which will also bring in traffic. You have to make the brave decision whether you can at the moment afford to outsource or not. But choose wisely.

Guest posting is a great way of outsourcing and it is free…. your site get’s content, it cost’s you nothing and frees you up to make videos or slide shows, is that worth focusing on?

PS, I am free to write a guest post should you require one ;-)

    Regards
    Andi

      Hi Andi!

You make a good point about article directories, but they can work as long as you don’t publish duplicate content. Whether it’s re-writing an original post or completely writing a new one, they can work at driving traffic from article directories. Though, like you say, if you’re going to spend time writing a new post, you may as well put your energy into writing a guest post.

I’ve outsourced a few things for my site, which I’d highly recommend. It helped me to save time doing certain things, which I could then spend on working on other aspects of my site. I have my own personal rule for this however – I only outsource things that I know how to do myself, but takes up too much time. So, if I don’t know how to do something, I try to learn it myself before getting someone else to do it. Admittedly, this may be a strange way to approach things, but it’s helped me learn much more about each aspect of my website/business that I may have missed out on otherwise.

Great comment (as always) Andi! All the best

        Hi Matt

“Admittedly, this may be a strange way to approach things,…”

Not at all, I understand completely, also when it comes to outsourcing the job, you have an idea how long it should take, how it should be done and you can explain more clearly what you want doing as you understand the process.

Outsourcing is about saving time and money. If someone can do a job faster and leaves you to work on something else then that is perfect.

Cheers oh and yes it is sunny here too :-)
        Andi

        • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

My thoughts exactly! If you know what a task consists of, you can outsource it more effectively.

An added benefit of doing this, certainly from my point of view, is that you learn more about each aspect of your blog/business. This has helped me when writing posts about these subjects because I have had experience learning about it myself.

  • kundan, http://quiteinfo.com/

It’s very informative blog. I get some important information about how we increase traffic to my website. I surely try to do as directed here. thanks

    • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Kundan! Glad you found the post useful. Hope you’ll be able to implement some of these tips to drive traffic to your site. All the best

  • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Hi Matt! Yes, people should be careful if using these methods. Quality is always better than quantity, so people should look to making quality comments, posts, social media updates, rather than simply making as many as possible.

The worst thing to do is annoy people and spamming posts, comments, SM, etc. will do this easily. People should remember that the whole point of doing this is to “attract” traffic to a site, not put them off. Be helpful and informative and people will be more willing to visit.
