Advertising and looking for ways to promote your online business are always going to be a vital part of bringing in new online business. Without good advertising, how can you hope to find new clients or customers?
Now we have discussed many ways to advertise your business online in a traditional sense. Today though, I thought I’d talk to you about alternate ways that you can advertise your business that you may not have thought of.
These suggestions aren’t revolutional, but they do try to encourage you to think in more ways than purely ‘online’. Just because you run your business online, it doesn’t mean that offline advertising won’t work for you.

Flags & Banner Signs
Do you run your business from an office? If so, have you considered displaying some sort of visual advertisement on the outside of your building? If you haven’t, then you could be missing out!
The great thing about banner signs or flags is that they act as passive advertisements. You only have to pay for the sign once (though you may have to check with whoever owns the building) and then you can display it for as long as you want. This way, you can grab the attention of potential clients or customers in your local area that otherwise wouldn’t know about you.
Of course, this doesn’t just have to be just advertising. Having a simple logo displayed on the outside of your building can help to make your business look more professional. A great site that I’ve found that does this for you is ‘Sign A Rama Footscray’ who make Flags & Banner signs.
Depending on your business, you may be travelling a lot. Some people use this as an opportunity to display advertisement about their business on their car or van whilst they travel.
For example, say you are a freelance graphic/web designer who does business in and around your state/county. You need to travel a lot between all your current clients for meetings and related business. Whilst travelling in your car, you could have vehicle signage displaying contact details for your business. That way, you may be able to find a few extra clients whilst travelling around.
Admittedly, this type of advertising won’t work for everyone, but if you do a lot of travelling then you could make the most of it.
Now this may seem very obvious, but I know a lot of people that run online businesses who don’t have their own business cards. We live in an age of telling people when we meet them to “follow me on Twitter” or “check out my Facebook page”, which is great, but what if I forget!
Business cards are great because you can just hand them out to new people with all your contact details on them without them having to remember them all. Some people think that because we live in a digital age that business cards are somehow old-fashioned. I’ve had someone ask to give me their digital business card before via smart phone, only for it not to work because our phones were incompatible. I have since forgotten their details! A simple “old-fashioned” business card would have been SO much easier and much less hassle.
Honestly, I don’t know why we don’t see this type of advertising more often. Digital projection can be a great way to grab people’s attention with an animated logo or promotion. The great thing is that all you really need is a projector and a wall!
One of the best examples I ever saw of this being used was when I was at university. It was during my first (fresher’s) week in halls of residence. Someone in one of the upper floors had placed a projector in their dorm window pointing at the wall just above the entrance to the halls of residence. On it they had a short animation of a university website logo that that person was working on. Within that first week, just about everyone from the first year had visited that site because of that one digital projected ad!
Now, the one down side to this type of advertising is that these types of ads tend to only display well at night, when the projection can be clearly seen. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t work for you. Why not set up this kind of advertising at night when you are at home. Just point a projector out of your office window onto a nearby wall that visible to passing people.
Most people will think of big multinational corporations/brands when I mention sponsorship, but small businesses can find sponsorship a good way to advertise themselves. OK, you may not be able to afford to get your business displayed on the front of your favourite football (soccer) team’s shirt, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use sponsorship effectively. You just have to think more creatively!
The whole point of sponsorship is to get the word out about your business to as many “interested” people as necessary. “Interested” is the key word here as you don’t want to waste money advertising to people who couldn’t care less who you are.
For example, let’s say that you run an online pet supply website. Now there would be no point in sponsoring a local fun run, as that would probably be of more interest to the “health & fitness” type. But what about sponsoring a local pet show. That way when people go to the “Local Your Business Pet Show” they all know about your site!
